4. “Totem”

Barry Coffin
Location: North of 6th St. - McDonald Dr.
Year purchased: 1993

This piece welcomes travelers from I-70's west Lawrence exit, and celebrates Lawrence's relationship with Native America. Home to Haskell Indian Nations University, Lawrence has a unique connection to the history and culture of her predecessors.

Totem, in a spirit of hope, points to the heavens as it represents the diversity and unity of Native America.

Barry Coffin is a Native American sculptor and painter of Potawatomi and Creek descent. He received his Associate of Fine Arts degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and is a founding member of Artists in Support of American Indian Religious Freedom.
