2. “Improvisation”
Jon Havener
Location: 23rd & Massachusetts Sts.
(NE Corner)
Year purchased: 1990
Located at the entrance
of Massachussets Street from the south end, this piece
welcomes the viewer to the unique history of struggle and
triumph that awaits at the northern end of the street in
Historic Downtown Lawrence.
The granite vertical slab
- a common, utilitarian form - is the monument-like backdrop
to a beautiful natural form that seems to have been born
out of conflict, even sacrifice.
The piece relates well
to its environment, calling attention to the twisting
trees.
Havener is a professor of
Metalsmithing and Jewelry at the University of Kansas.
His
smithed and fabricated sculptures have been exhibited
nationally in galleries and competitive exhibitions.
