17. “Freeform”
Stephen Johnson
Location: 6th & Massachusetts St.
(SW corner)
Year purchased: 2004
This piece enjoys a prime
spot on the south side of 6th Street between Vermont and
Massachusetts. A unique manipulation of the letters F,R,E
and E, this work becomes a "flame" of Lawrence's most carefully
guarded ideal - freedom for all people.
Juxtaposed diagonally
across the street from "Flame" (the city's
most well known sculpture - in front of City Hall), "Freeform"
complements its mobile counterpart by achieving the sense
of movement, not with moving parts but with shapes
that move the eye from bottom to top in an adventurous
manner.
