JUROR
Douglass Freed, recently retired founding director/curator
of the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, grew its collection
to more then 800 objects in his seven-year tenure. Many
of these are large-scale, three-dimensional works. Curated
exhibitions by Mr. Freed have been profiled in the national
press in such publications as Sculpture magazine, American
Ceramics, Art and Perception, and the Annual Guide to
International Ceramics Exhibitions. Mr. Freed is a nationally
exhibited painter represented in major galleries in New
York, Boston, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, St. Louis
and Kansas City. The Daum collection can be seen at <daummuseum.org>.

CRITERIA and
SPECIFICATIONS FOR SELECTION
Works that expand the idea of what public sculpture can
be are encouraged. All work entered must be free-standing
and suitable for long-term outdoor public display. The
durability of the work will be a consideration for selection.
Since the show is in a high-traffic area, the safety of
the public, including children, must be taken into consideration.
Work must be as vandal-proof as possible and cannot have
sharp edges or be breakable. Several sites are available
for ground-mounted works. All accepted entries must be
capable of being properly secured to a site.
ELIGIBILITY
Open to all artists 18 years of age and older. All entries
must be original work and may not have been shown previously
in this exhibition.
ENTRY PROCEDURE
Artists may enter up to three (3) works for consideration.
Please submit digital JPEG images no smaller than 1500
pixels x 1500 pixels on a CD. Entrants should also submit
a biographical paragraph and a brief statement about
each work entered. Mail CD and completed entry form with
biographical paragraph and statement and a self-addressed
stamped envelope (SASE) to:
City Manager’s Office
Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibition
P.O. Box 708
Lawrence, KS 66044
Please include a SASE for return of CD or this
will be discarded. Entries must be received by Friday,
January 30, 2009.
DELIVERY and
RETURN OF ARTWORK
Artists will be solely responsible for the delivery of
artwork and return shipping arrangements; artists will
also be responsible for all shipping charges. Accepted
work must be received between 8 am and 3 pm on Friday,
April 24, 2009 unless prior arrangements are made with
Diane Stoddard. Artists will be required to reclaim their
work by Friday, April 5, 2010.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
Selected artists must sign a loan agreement in which they
agree to: 1)
permit the City of Lawrence to install the artwork; 2)
promise that the artwork will remain on display for the
duration of the exhibition; and 3) recognize that, in
the interest of public safety and community priority,
the City has the right to remove damaged sculpture unless
promptly and satisfactorily repaired by the artist. Work
will be insured against property loss up to a maximum
