“Ghost of the Forrest”
Joseph L. Castle, III
Bellevue, Idaho
Medium : Steel, Copper

The examination of the myth of coming of age is the motivation behind this sculpture.

The Ghost of the Forrest began by acquiring animal bones and then transforming them into an upright, life-like form moving forward.
The artist has taken the remnants of what was alive—now dead and assembled them into an awkward figure struggling to translate and adapt to a new, unknown environment.

The grotesque shape repels at first but from the intuitive observer, a twinge of empathy eminates.

We who have been there, feel for those in the throes of adolescence. It’s that helpless, insecure, uncomfortable feeling of being caught between two worlds.
